 Exodus 14:10 - 14

 Matthew 6:25 - 34

If there is one topic that is sure to raise tensions in families it is about how much luggage with take with us. The first time I travelled overseas I had more luggage than I could carry. Within the first two weeks I had sent back a whole suitcase of stuff ahead of me to London. I was a Boy Scout and I took the pledge to be prepared. I've been determined to be exactly that - prepared.

I'm sure you have had or heard similar discussions, even if it is not verbal as people pack. They say, "I'll pack this, just in case …..” I reason. Be prepared for causal events, or a formal event, maybe a costume party. Prepared for warm weather, also prepare just in case it snows so I'll take a pair of snow shoes, just in case. Maybe the queen will invite me for tea. One has to be prepared. I don't know how to travel light.

Fact is, there's a lot about travel I don't know. I don't know how to interpret the rules regarding special supersaver flights - half price if you leave on Wednesdays during the duck-hunting season and return when the moon is full in an even numbered year.

READINGS:                          Matthew 6:6-7

Last week we shared how we can include every thought and every part of our life into prayer. It is really being honest and being who we really are before God. The more we become free to be who God made us uniquely to be, the more we will be filled with the Spirit and allow the spirit to flow through us. We continue this week with sharing how we can overcome obstacles that cause our prayer life to falter.

Researchers once surveyed people about which was their favourite room in the house. The top answer was the kitchen. People love the kitchen. Most husbands’ top answer was the bedroom. Want to guess what the top answer was for mothers of young children? The bathroom!

Why? You lock the door. You keep those little ragamuffins out of there for a few minutes. You keep your husband out of there for at least a couple of minutes. The idea is that you find some place where you know you are alone. You are free from stress. You find a sanctuary – a holy place.

God wants to give us a sanctuary. There is another kind of presence when we are gathered together, but there is a unique way in which we experience the presence of God when we are alone.

Scripture: Luke 12: 13-21

This week I read a little prayer…

“As I lay me down to sleep, I pray dear Lord that you me do keep.  I pray my stocks are on the rise, and that my analyst is wise. That all the wine I sip is finest white, and that my bath is watertight. I pray that squash won’t get too tough, and that all my sushi’s fresh enough. I pray my cordless phone still works, and that my career won’t lose its perks. My microwave won’t radiate, and my town house won’t depreciate.  I pray my health club doesn’t close, and that my money market grows. If I go broke before I wake, I pray my Merc they won’t take.”

This funny little tongue-in-cheek prayer represents someone’s idea of what’s important. ...important things in a privileged life.

The passage from Luke that we are going to be looking at today forces us to look at our lives and ask ourselves… “What’s really important in life or some may ask, what’s in it for me?” Our scripture tells the story of a man who has plenty…more than plenty and what he does with his bounteous blessings. This passage is very relevant to us today because a lot of people in the world have made their priority in life the attainment of enough money to live the good life. This country is a blessed country, with a good standard of living.

READINGS:          Philippians 4:6 - 9

God made you to flourish – to receive life from outside yourself, creating vitality within yourself and producing blessings beyond yourself. God wants you to become the person he made you to be. As God helps you to grow, you will change, but you will always be you. An acorn can grow into an oak tree; but it cannot become a rose bush.  It can be a healthy oak or it can be a stunted oak – but it won’t be a shrub. God did not create you to be somebody else. Part of my role as your spiritual leader is to help all of us to grow spiritually.

Sometimes you think that you know the answers to some event. You’ve been through it before and you’re confident that you can handle the next one. Listen to this story:
